auto* _is_ wacky. for instance, I discovered the following: if you
build the CVS snapshot in another directory and then do `make dist'
there, the resultant disty is unbuildable (the problem was also
something having to do with missing dependencies on the .x files,
IIRC). a disty resulting from a CVS build "in place" is usually fine,
though.
