I can't remember, but it was something very similar.
Is it possible that the build is still picking up the editline
libraries from /usr/lib

So, I then tried configuring with --enable-shared=no.
This built successfully.
I don't understand why that worked. Do you?
No. But it seems to often work as a last resort for mac builds that
otherwise fail.
In fact the INSTALL instructions of some packages include it in
their ./configure instructions for Mac.
