... which doesn't sound convenient, *sigh*.

Technically, strings in Guile all live in writable memory, so it
may actually be wiser to just live with that.

FWIW, the interpreters of Ikarus and Bigloo consider literal strings

Should we just revert the patch, or does anyone have a better idea?
