Hi Winfried,

thanks for your reply.

Oh dear, both patches from README.I18N are missing, that cannot work... I haven't seen such a buggy Xaw3d package for a longer time. Most of the working bug fixes from git://gitorious.org/xaw3d/xaw3d.git (available via web frontend at http://gitorious.org/xaw3d/ ) are missing.

As this mail will be available in public archives and linux distributors might read this:

@linux distributors: Please provide a working Xaw3d release for the users of your distribution. git master of git://gitorious.org/xaw3d/xaw3d.git has been tested by redhat without any regressions for a few month now (ok, because of (now solved) problems they decided to add an additional patch that makes missing fontsets not a fatal error). Before that, individual patches have been tested by several distributions, so all of these patches have been tested for at least more than a year. There have been no known problems. Please forward this message to the person responsible for the Xaw3d package.
This has not been changed since I have installed it on
my system (May 2010).

The 'git.savannah.gnu.org' patch did not help.
Of cause it does not. It does not help for a broken Xaw3d. It's designed to help in case Xaw3d does not support international mode.
By the way: I have - after some changes - 'gv' compiled and
installed using 'neXtaw-0.15.1' instead of Xaw3d. Only the
'git.savannah.gnu.org' patch has been applied.
No segfault during some tests.
I would have expected this. We have an unpublished patch available that makes GNU gv run on plain Xaw3d, no production quality, but it works without segfaults.

Now that we know that a buggy Xaw3d is the cause for your problems, I cannot help any further.

Cf. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=587349 for an example of a bug report for the above problem. Note that for Slackware both patches are missing, while in Fedora only the second patch mentioned in README.I18N was missing. You should report this bug to Slackware, the bug report from redhat might help you.
