gzip 1.4 make check error

gzip 1.4 fails make check when built on Solaris 2.5.1, Solaris 7 & Solaris 8
using any of the following Sun compilers
cc: WorkShop Compilers 4.2 30 Oct 1996 C 4.2
cc: Forte Developer 7 C 5.4 2002/03/09
cc: Sun C 5.8 2005/10/13

with the message:
