This is the relevant code snipet from the source of 2.2.3-5:

   * Start out with 1K of path space, and enough, in any case,
   * to hold the user's paths.
#define MAXPATHLEN 1024
  if (fts_palloc(sp, MAX(fts_maxarglen(argv), MAXPATHLEN)))
    goto mem1;

First of all this shouldn't fail whether MAXPATHLEN is defined or not.
I think the macro is misnamed, from the code it looks like it should
be called MINPATHLEN.
