I have tried installing Hurd and everything seems to go
quite well util the last stage of the first boot.
At this point the kernel panics.
The precise actions were:
a.) mke2fs -O sparse_super -o hurd /dev/hdc1
b.) mount -t ext2 /dev/hdc /gnu
c.) cd /gnu
d.) tar --same-owner -xpzf /backup/gnu-20011016.tar.gz
e.) reboot under grub
f.) grub> root (hd1,0)
g.) grub> kernel /boot/gnumach.gz -s root=device:hd2s1
h.) grub> module
hurd/ext2fs.static --multiboot-command-line=${kernel-command-line} --host-p
riv-port=${host-port} --device-master-port=${device-port} --exec-server-task
=${exec-task} -T typed ${root} ${task-create} ${task-resume}
i.) grub> module /lib/ld.so.1 /hurd/exec ${exec-task=task-create}
j.) grub> boot
I noticed that it seemed to find the correct ide devices,
so I believe it was working reasonably well upto the point of panic.
The machine reboots too quickly for me to take down many details,
but I believe that EIP = 0x12144b at the point of panic.
It would be quite nice if a more recent cut could be placed in the archive,
as I would be quite happy to just try again.
