So I agree with Marcus, and I want to bring the key issue into
highlight:

This is sometimes clearly right.  For example, the sound card on my
laptop, or a typical desk-top arrangement.

Other times this is clearly right.

I want to point out that these are not two different ways to look at
the sound card, but that they are two different usage models for sound
cards, and both should be supported.

This is what Marcus was saying, but I just wanted to make it crystal
clear in case it got missed, because it's important.
