you have suggestions or ideas about how to improve that one, please
simply change or add them.

OK, that's fine for starters.  As referenced from
there is a list of packages that need work at
<http://unstable.buildd.net/buildd/hurd-i386_Failed.html>.  The former
page also has additional information about porting issues.  Of course,
not all packages are considered likewise important, so you could ask on
<debian-hurd@lists.debian.org> if you're unsure which one to start with.

The GNU Hurd project covers all areas of systems' programming and thus
has enough areas to work on to keep you busy for years.  Have fun
