Doing this in the exec server was always just a cheap hack because we
didn't have a translator to do transparent decompression for files in
general. That's what's really interesting. The only reason you might need
the support directly in the exec server is to use compressed binaries for
the bootstrap tasks, and I doubt that's all that interesting these days (it
was when we wanted to fit a bootable system on a floppy disk 20 years ago).
