I'll see about having that be a user setting instead.
If the needed change it just to change some false to true in the code (or anything similar), you can do that Vim (and probably other good text editors). Vim may open the XPI file (it is a zip file), and you may edit any file inside it. The "recompile" step will be simply to save your changes inside Vim.
I have edited Firefox XPI files this way. The changed files work just fine. Where is the code is that change to enable debug mode?
