 \markup { bla blah \flat }

No change. It makes the page wider and shifts the music to the right
and partially off the page .

\header{ instrument = "Clarinet in \markup{ B\\flat }" }
% or \header{ instrument = "Clarinet in \markup{ B\flat }" }

Thanks, added to bug cvs (as title-markup-flat)

not a bug. use \markup { Clarinet in B \flat }
or somesuch.

Ahh! I didn't get it that the markup couldn't be inside the quotes. I see at the very bottom of:

7.5.8 Creating titles

is a comment which makes this partly clear. Maybe this could be expanded in the doc's.
