Yes, that works (it also solves the slur clash problem). But it's unclear
then what the "portato" mark is for. I've never seen it used the way
lilypond draws it.
It's entirely possible that I've reversed the sign. I'd be grateful
for someone to check in a good reference work, and apply the relevant
change in the MF sources (probably swapping a "u" and "d" for the
portato sign.)
