I guess the RAM could be the bottleneck. (256 meg RAM seems to be enough).
Also, there is a memory leak in some 2.6 versions (I don't remember which
ones), this could make things even worse.
It may sometimes help to terminate make and re-run it. It may also help to
shut down X, this frees some memory.
