I don't really have the competence to answer your question, but
my guess is that it may depend on the specific font you have chosen, what platform you use and what fonts you have installed. I recommend you to complement your bug report with all the relevant
information on your system and of course also on which LilyPond
version you use.

Workaround: since the latin a is (oh happy phishers!) indistinguishable from the
cyrillic one, I used that one as the last character of Petra. That makes the
"space eating" disappear.
