This means that there is an extra character somewhere. I noticed that your example contained

\version "2.10.6")

with an extra ). Please double-check your input to make sure you have a valid input file and try again.

Nope, that was a typo in the email, but not in the file.

I re-typed the whole thing anyway, but it didn't change anything.

I've just downloaded 2.11.13 and tried that - it breaks for me (I'm on an Intel Mac running OS X 10.4.8).

Output from LP is different for 2.11.13:
