Another idea that comes to my mind is the MacTeX package
  http://www.tug.org/mactex/
It essentially installs a lot of traditional UNIX stuff, plus a GUI  
program called TeXShop, which does not know so much about what the  
programs do, but more serves as an interface. Perhaps it can be  
adapted somehow to LilyPond.
