Graham, I made some decisions based on scouring the pics in

lilypond/Documentation/pictures

and I went for 400 pixels width, 72dp in png format.

I now have the text and the pictures all cropped and formatted properly. I  
have taken
a look at the engraving.texi file to see how pictures are formatted, it  
isn't 100%
clear but I get the idea.

So i assume that I have to copy my pictures to:

lilypond/Documentation/pictures

make the edits in the tutorial.texi and then use git to 'add' the new png  
files and
then submit a patch that way?

Or is that a bit advanced for me at the moment :)
