As a serious answer to #2 and #3 (well, "somewhat more serious"): I've  
tried to learn
the absolute minimum about git.  All I know is that when I didn't follow  
points 2 and
3, people yelled at me.  I stopped doing it, and then people stopped  
yelling at me.
(Well, they stopped yelling at me for _that_ reason :)

If you care, then you're welcome to read the git man pages, or tutorials,  
or various
mailing list posts about git, or whatever.
