Feeling guilty about that, I stayed up a bit past my bedtime and found that 
extremely large stretchability does have effect.

Given that stretchability defaults to be equal to space (typically 2-8 staff 
spaces) a value of 200 seems extreme, but that is what it takes to let the 
springs between the staves compress a little.
