It's not me that calls Ghostscript, it's LilyPond.  Once LilyPond has 
finished compiling the .ps file, you get a brief "command prompt" window 
while the .pdf/.png is being generated.  I've always presumed this is GS. 
Generally, it's not a problem, and I'd guess most Windows folk find it 
helpful, since it's the only real indication that LP has pretty much 
finished.  But when you're compiling 800 odd files twice, it gets in the way 
a bit.
