Yes, the reason is that lilypond treats beams as melismas (which is the usual
convention in classical scores; only in modern scores you'll find lyrics on
beamed notes!), so there cannot be any lyrics on the subsequent notes. Thus,
musicxml2ly ignores those syllables. If you want lyrics on those notes, you
have to ignore beamining, which can be done with the --no-beaming command line
option to musicxml2ly:
musicxml2ly --no-beaming lyrics-melisma.xml
