Check the very beginning of the file; some mail-handling programs
(not necessarily yours; it could at your ISP or his ISP) add 
a > in front of any "From" which occurs at the beginning of a
line.  Very annoying when combined with git.  :(

I often get git patches which begin ">From 1234763145" and they
fail to apply; to fix it, just delete the > and then save the file
and try git am again.
