If progress or messages go to stdout, they would be mixed in with other  
LilyPond text output, like that from \displayLilyMusic \retrograde {c e g}

(Output from lilypond -v already goes to standard output, which is fine  
because that is the *only* output of lilypond -v.)

So if progress messages go to stdout, we would need a way to separate them  
from other text output.
