I was similarly frustrated, and decided to use variables
  motifBACH = { b a c bes }
to hold the common themes and simply include them in the parts
  violinINotes = { g b d c \motifBACH }
This is easier for me to read and is also useful when the themes return
at later times.

The service provided by \quoteDuring, copying notes from another part,
was not a service that I needed, after all. (Maybe we should de-
emphasize it in the user manual?)

By contrast, the very similar \cueDuring is quite helpful, because I
usually remember what instrument I want to cue and when, but don't want
to be bothered to find the part and figure out how to transpose it.

It is a bug. I think it is warned about in the manual, but will
need to check. The natural response to problems is to first help the
user who is stuck, but eventually some nice person will come along and
put the bug(s) on a list of things to fix, or at least warn people about.
