I have a feeling that the way I could fix this would only reinforce the  
kludginess of the dual way that articulations are handled in LilyPond.

David - are you working on parser improvements that'll streamline the way  
that articulations are handled and created?  If so, this issue may go away  
once you're done, in which case I'll hold off on fixing it w/ more code  
that wedges the articulation-as-event versus articulation-as-list divide.
