FWIW he's switched to numbers for coreutils (fileutils+sh-utils+textutils)
releases. coreutils 4.54 was the last release.

Personally I find the whole "0.1a" scheme confusing, especially when the
letters are used for pre-releases. E.g.: 0.1a (pre-release) < 0.1 (full
release).

If I'm using a nice shiny package manager, e.g.: rpm or dpkg, I get a horrible
feeling when I have to upgrade, say, autoconf using the manual method, rather
than upgrading the packages.

Also, some platforms may not have a working up-to-date
autoconf+automake+libtool set-up. For instance, DJGPP had only ports of
autoconf 2.50 and automake 1.5 until last week. (Not that DJGPP I've tried
building mailutils with DJGPP. But it might work using external Windows
programs to get around the DOS-ness of DJGPP.)
