Hmm, I didn't know it was not maintained any more. Do you have any
pointers to the code repository?
I believe 2.7 was the last that was ever released in 1998/9. There
have been a couple of CERT security advisories that most
distributions patch, but have never been included in the formal
source. (Redhat, for instance, hasn't supplied it since 7.3, and
Fedora may never have supplied it.)
I'm not sure there is a code repository anymore. You might try here:

Mimeview partially reproduces metamail functionality. It could be
further expanded into a full-fledged metamail replacement, I
believe.
Hmmm...metamail vs mimeview. Perhaps an integration of both, and
expansion through mimeview?
