I cannot reproduce this with GNU make 3.79.1 on Solaris 7 or Debian
GNU/Linux unstable.

I'm concerned that something subtle happened to the file during email
transfer.

If you still see this problem with 3.79.1, can you gzip the makefile
showing the problem and send it to me as an encoded attachment to
preserve all the whitespace and/or special chars?
