MULTILINE_TARGET = foo \
bar \*** any non-tab whitespace here causes problem
$(MULTILINE_TARGET) : $(BUNCHASOURCE)

Ahh! I don't think this is adequately documented.
Would it be possible to change to the more intuitive standard syntax:
[Makefile,12]: *** ...
