Details:
GNU Make's library search feature (activated by prerequisites of the form
-lLIBNAME) searches the hard-coded directories /lib and /usr/lib along with
make's own libdir. This is unhelpful on a multilib system. Make should
provide a way to vary the search path depending on the architecture of the
target being built.
I originally reported this against Fedora, and I posted a patch series there
that adds the feature and makes some other cleanups:
