Follow-up Comment #1:

That's a valid statement in version GNU make 3.82.  You must be using an older
version of GNU make.

Note that the online documentation always refers to the latest released
version of GNU make.  You should be referring to the documentation that came
with your version of GNU make, if you're not using the latest release.
