[bug #40639] GNU Make with profiling information

Follow-up Comment #2, bug #40639 (project make):

I have cleaned up the code to remove the warnings that were generated by the
newly introduced code.

I also reworked the rebase on the profile-rebase branch to contain cleaner
patches and to separate the non-essential changes (e.g.: some whitespace
fixes) from essential ones. Also the code for formattable profiling and the
switch to using -P instead of -u have been squashed into a single commit for
easier review.
