'make' command

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS .it's the second day of using it so i'm still pretty new. I've downloaded emacs25.1 and configured it but when using make command to compile it is says: 
"make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found.  Stop."
I've already looked it up on Google and tried 'make all' and installing various packages but the situation is 
the same.
