Follow-up Comment #4, bug #65972 (group make):

I don't think we will allow "going back" to the old behavior.  That behavior
was just a bug (IMO) and also, your makefile is fragile by relying on it (if
that object file was ever mentioned anywhere else outside of a pattern rule,
it would break).

If my suggestion doesn't work there must be something more subtle going on
that I didn't catch just by reading that specific makefile (I didn't pull the
Git repo or try the build myself).  Hopefully the comment below gives some
tips for how to parse the debug output and things to look for.
