   I successfully built and installed 9.1 from Portable C. 

   I then attempted to use this working mit-scheme command to install from the
   standard unix source. However at the ./configure step I get:

   configure: error: m4 not found
   configure: error: ./configure failed for microcode

   The README says that if I have the latest release installed and working (as I
   do), yet cannot compile the sources, I should feel free to report this as a
   bug.

   I haven't submitted a bug report before, so I'm not entirely sure what the
   standard protocol is for supplying information. However I'm running Ubuntu
   11.10 on an x86-64 architecture if that is of any use.

You will need to install the m4 package before you can build a
native-code Scheme (i386 or x86-64).

There are also a few others that you may want, such as libx11-dev if
you want X11 support.  Can someone else on the list who uses Debian or
Ubuntu pipe up with the list of packages that you may want before
building Scheme?  We should write it down somewhere more permanent, if
it hasn't already been written down.

By the way, on x86-64, there's no reason to use the portable C
distribution; you should just use the x86-64 binary distribution.
(The `portable C distribution' is essentially a binary distribution,
but with C code instead of machine code.)
