flashing screen symptoms (an example)

I forgot to include a practical example of the flashing problem in my
previous e-mail. To see what I was talking about you can launch pine
and press CTRL-X followed by n really fast. You will see that the whole
screen gets refreshed (cleared and redrawn/flashes) sometimes when in fact
is does not need to be.

Why does this happen?
