Perhaps it's related to the version of gcc. I'm not on Redhat right now
(I have a workable Redhat 8), so I changed the compiler definitions in
config.status to gcc and g++ (which happens to be gcc 2.95.4), and it
works fine. I did test-compiles using gcc 3.3 (not on Redhat, since
their ahem install leaves little space. Perhaps they've tinkered with
the compiler and broken something there.
