There's two things that I see - it's threaded (but on the good side, it 
appears to be only doing work in one thread), and you haven't identified 
the version of ncurses that you're using (there was a change followed by 
two fixes in this area in the past few months).  I suspect you're either 
running a version before the last fix, or have found a place needing a 
third fix.
