ncurses usually reads terminfo (in a different location).
It can be told to look for termcap first.
To see what it's found, use infocmp, which lists the location in the
first line, e.g.,

#       Reconstructed via infocmp from file: 
/usr/local/ncurses/lib/terminfo/s/screen.xterm-new
