Ah. Darn. Tru64.
This is the first&only time I've seen this.
 I changed #! to /bin/env bash to workaround, or edited the few that hit (there are many there, but only a few are run).
It is working otherwise.

no, it's POSIX (for the last 25 years or so).

it's correct as is.  Perhaps you're using Solaris 10, which is mentioned
in the release notes for ncurses 6:
