Hello,

I've had a problem using parted 1.4.5. It said me that I was found a bug
and the message it gave me was:

Assertion (walk-> geom.length > 63 * 5) at disc.c:1008 in function
_disk_check_sanity() failed

Details:

That ocurred when i was trying to print the partition table of /dev/hdc
and parted said that "partition not aligned" because another
partitioning tool generated the partition table incorrectly.

Certainly, it was generated by Partition Magic 4.0.

I used the bootdisk version of parted. If I try to do the same but with
parted 1.0.13 (I know it's ancient but it comes on potato) I obtain:

GNU parted 1.0.13

...Copyright stuff...

Using /dev/hdc
Warning: The operating system thinks the geometry on /dev/hdc is
4962/255/63.
You should check that this matches the BIOS geometry before using this
program.
(parted) print
No Implementation: Partition 1 isn't aligned to cylinder boundaries.
Need to
add support for this.
(parted)

These are dmesg messages about the hard disk i'm talking about (hdc):
hdc: SAMSUNG SV4084D, ATA DISK drive
hdc: SAMSUNG SV4084D, 38928MB w/444kB Cache, CHS=4962/255/63, UDMA
Partition check:
 hdc: hdc1 hdc2

cfdisk shows me the next about this hardisk:

                                  cfdisk 2.10f

                              Disk Drive: /dev/hdc
                            Size: 40819064832 bytes
Heads: 255 Sectors per Track: 63 Cylinders: 4962

Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    hdc2 Primary Win95 FAT32 3142,06
                        Pri/Log Free Space 0,04*
    hdc1 Primary Win95 FAT32 (LBA) 37671,76*

What is this free space?

If you need more details, please indicate me how can I help you in
debugging and enhancing this useful tool by providing necessary info. In
any case, congratulations for your work in parted. Sorry, if it is a
known bug.

(Please, Cc me because I'm not subscribed to the list)

Thanks.
