Say you leave the kernel as it is, and have 15 partitions with some
empty slots in the table before the last used entry.  Now you create a
new partition, which will use the first empty slot.  Suddenly what was
your 15th partition is now your 16th, and is inaccessible.  Easy to
delete the new partition to get your old one back again though.

I suppose it depends on how other OSes work; if some other OS decides to
create an entry using a high numbered slot, we wouldn't be able to
access it from linux, if we change the kernel.

Having discussed it a bit with a couple of people the conclusion was
that we should leave the kernel alone, and fix parted to match it.
