One answer: read the source of how GNU Parted does it.
(Also, Parted has plenty of documentation about how it works)
Second answer: why re-invent the wheel? Why not use GNU Parted?
In fact, why not use the GUI's already available for libparted (eg: in
Conectiva's and Red Hat's installers) Note: this is only possible
if you comply with the GPL licence. I hope that will be possible for
you.
