Parted can't copy new partition :(

Basic problem is that parted 1.6.5 can't copy an ext3 partition built as part 
of the RedHat 9 installation using e2fprogs 1.32.   The error message I get 
is

This ext2 filesystem has a rather strange layout!  Parted can't resize this 
(yet).

Since an e2fsck -f on the partition reports no errors, I am tentatively 
concluding that there is something new that parted is not yet capable of 
handling.   Has anyone else run into this?
