When trying to partition an 2GB USB stick (PNY) by starting with

  parted /dev/sdf

I got the response

Using /dev/sdf
You found a bug in GNU Parted. Please email a bug report to \
address@hidden containing the version (1.6.6), and the \
following message:

Assertion (heads < 256) at ../../libparted/disk_dos.c:580 \
in function probe_partition_for_geom() failed.

Ignore/Cancel? Terminated

In fact using

  dpkg -l "*parted*"

I got

ii  libparted1.7-1                                 1.7.1-3

ii  parted                                         1.7.1-3

My machine has a Pentium 4 with 2.4 GHz
My kernel is version 2.6.18-3-686
