How long is this platform estimated to be viable?

Oracle is currently promising support through January 2021.

How about we leave the patch applied, but make a note to un-snarl
things for some later time, either a fixed number of years, or
earlier should Solaris 10 become more sane (or die completely).

That'd be fine.

Right, that's towards the excruciatingly correct approach,
which should also include a configure-time test. The pain
might be worth it, though

That'd be even better. While you're at it, you could use the new approach for every program that has a main+argc+argv. I was too lazy to do any of this, though; I just did the minimal change to get it to work. Porting is supposed to be relaxing, no?
