I decided to try older versions, and was not able to reproduce with
5.2 (Debian Lenny chroot). But was able with a Debian Squeeze chroot,
with readline 6.1. So, this seems to be a regression in readline6,
that is completely independent of the kernel (I tried this in chroots
inside a machine running 3.2 that can also reproduce the problem
normally.
Also, I found that the easiest way to reproduce the issue is using
rlwrap cat > output and then diffing against the original file.
It breaks near to the 4096 number of chars, but the exact number where
the first failure appears varies a bit (I've seen it both lower and
higher than 4096).
