I see from your other message that there is a POSIX section specifically
for the shell's vi-mode, which I wasn't aware of.  Looking at that, I
definitely agree with you that the changes I've been suggesting belong
in an extended mode.  If you decide to create one, I'll be happy to
resubmit the patches against it, if that is useful to you.

I think the experience of the random vi user--ignorant of all these
POSIX distinctions like I was--will find the extended mode matches their
expectations much better.  Thanks for your help.
