It would be really nice if the "active region" and the selection could
be made the same. Notice that on both gnome-terminal and konsole the
default highlighting for the selection is inverse video, which is
rather awkward if the active region is using the same highlighting.
That is of course unless they're synchronized.

Unfortunately, there aren't standard or semi-standard escape
sequence to synchronize the selection with the active region.
XTerm has a "Manipulate Selection Data" that can be used to specify
text as the primary selection.  But that is only part of the puzzle.
You also would like readline and similar applications to be notified
about mouse clicks and mouse selection - but in a way that doesn't
disable the context menu (right-clicking) as well as selection
outside the readline input area.

If someone is interested on working with me on protocols
to better integrate the window system select/copy/paste,
let me know.
